An evaluation of groundwater vulnerability assessment methods in a rapidly urbanizing city: evidence from Dakar, Senegal

چکیده

Abstract In rapidly growing cities in the tropics, unregulated urban development presents a major risk to groundwater quality. Here, we assess vulnerability of an unconfined aquifer Quaternary sands Thiaroye area Dakar (Senegal) contamination using four GIS-based indices (DRASTIC, DRASTIC_N, SINTACS, SI). Our correlation assessed observed impact is semi-quantitative, relating quality, based on nitrate concentrations and tryptophan-like fluorescence degrees (i.e. coincidence rates). We show that considerably more has “very high vulnerability” according SI (36%) relative DRASTIC (5%) SINTACS (9%); “high estimated DRASTIC_N (100%), (66%) (69%). Single-parameter sensitivity tests depth, soil, topography, land use redox parameters strongly influence assessments vulnerability. Correlation with reveals better represented by (coincidence rates 56%) (43%), (38%) (34%). The underestimation DRASTIC, attributed their reliance assumed capacity unsaturated zone attenuate surface or near-surface contaminant loading, which low-income (Thiaroye) thin affords limited protection. inclusion land-use parameter improves characterization this low-income, urbanizing Dakar.

Evaluation of Impervious Surface Estimates in a Rapidly Urbanizing Watershed

Accurate measurement of impervious surface (IS) cover is an essential indicator of downstream water quality and a critical input variable for many water quality and quantity models. This study compares IS estimates from a recently developed satellite imagery/land cover approach with a more traditional aerial photography/land use approach. Both approaches are evaluated against a high-quality val...

Geospatial Assessment of Cholera in a Rapidly Urbanizing Environment

This study mapped out and investigated the spatial relationship between cholera incidences and environmental risk factors in the study area. The study area was stratified into eight zones. Water samples from each zone were collected and analyzed to determine the colony forming units. GIS layers including housing density, digitized roads, rivers, buildings, and cholera incidence data from hospit...

Vulnerability Assessment of Blida City

The seismic vulnerability of an urban area is of a great deal for local authorities especially those facing earthquakes. So, it is important to have an efficient tool to assess the vulnerability of existing buildings. The use of the VIP (Vulnerability Index Program) and the GIS (Geographic Information System) let us to identify the most vulnerable districts of an urban area. The use of the vuln...

Mapping Malaria Risk in Dakar, Senegal

Independent entomological variables and human socio-economic characteristics can influence the risk of malaria infection in urban areas, yet the imbalanced spatial distribution of infection remains in question. There is often a lack of simultaneous consideration of the factors responsible for the transmission of parasites. This work examines interactions between the entomological profile of urb...

Hypertension and Obesity in Dakar, Senegal

BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease is a major public health problem in many sub-Saharan African countries, but data on the main cardiovascular risk factors-hypertension and obesity-are almost nonexistent in Senegal. The aims of this study were therefore (i) to report the prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension among adults in Dakar, (ii) to assess the prevalence of general a...
